How to avoid issues with T-Mobile international roaming

I travel a couple times a year and every time I leave the US, I’m stressed about roaming. Sometimes calls don’t go through, other times data works super slow, and I always forget to check small details like APN settings or whether my plan even covers the country I’m visiting. It would be nice to have a clear way to prepare so I don’t waste time at the airport trying to fix things.
